What is a thesis or dissertation?

In short

A dissertation (also called a thesis in many countries) is an extended, original research project submitted for a degree. It sets a research question, reviews existing literature, applies a clear methodology, analyses data and presents findings the student defends as a contribution to their field. The exact term and requirements vary by country and university.

A thesis or dissertation is a major academic research project required for Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD degrees, demonstrating a student’s ability to conduct original research, critically analyse data and contribute new knowledge to their field. A strong thesis contains a well-defined research question, a comprehensive literature review, a robust methodology, thorough data analysis, an insightful discussion and clear conclusions. Swift Academic Services supports every stage of that journey, helping you plan, research, analyse, refine and format your own work to university standards.

Dissertation vs Thesis

Dissertation vs thesis: what is the difference?

In short

The two words describe the same kind of work, an extended piece of original research, but they are used differently by country. In the UK and most Commonwealth systems a dissertation is the project for a bachelor’s or master’s degree and a thesis is the larger project for a PhD. In the United States the terms are reversed: a thesis is written for a master’s degree and a dissertation for a doctorate.

Because the labels flip between academic systems, what matters is the level and the expectations, not the word on the cover page. We support both under either name.

Academic system“Thesis” usually means“Dissertation” usually means

Types

Types of dissertations

Dissertations take several forms depending on your discipline, your research question and whether you collect your own data. Most fall into one of these types.

Empirical

You collect and analyse primary data through surveys, experiments, interviews or observation to answer a defined question.

Non-empirical / theoretical

You build an argument from existing literature, theory and secondary data rather than collecting new data.

Systematic review

A structured, protocol-driven review of existing studies, common in health, nursing and the social sciences.

Case study

An in-depth investigation of one organisation, group, policy or event, often using mixed evidence.

Secondary-data

Analysis of existing datasets, records or archives instead of collecting new primary data.

Practice or design based

A creative, technical or professional artefact accompanied by a critical written commentary.

Academic level

Dissertations by academic level

Expectations rise with the level of study. Length and scope below are typical ranges only, actual requirements are set by your university and department.

Undergraduate dissertation

Your first major independent project, often a literature-based or small empirical study. Typically around 8,000 to 12,000 words.

Master’s dissertation (MSc, MA, MBA)

A deeper study with a clear methodology and original analysis. Typically around 15,000 to 25,000 words; MBA projects are often applied to a real organisation.

PhD / doctoral thesis

A substantial, original contribution to knowledge, defended in a viva or defense. Often 60,000 to 100,000 words, depending on the field.

Professional doctorates (EdD, DBA, DNP)

Applied doctoral research that connects rigorous method with professional practice in education, business or healthcare.

Structure & length

Dissertation structure, chapters and length

In short

Most dissertations follow a standard structure of five core chapters: Introduction, Literature Review, Methodology, Results or Findings, and Discussion and Conclusion, framed by front matter, references and appendices. Some disciplines merge or reorder chapters, and systematic-review or journal-style dissertations use their own formats set by the university.

Here is the sequence most universities expect, and roughly how the word count is shared across it.

01

Front matter

Title page, abstract, acknowledgements, contents, and lists of tables and figures.

02

Introduction

Background, the problem or gap, aim, objectives and research questions, plus the significance of the study.

03

Literature review

A critical, themed synthesis of existing research that builds your theoretical framework and locates the gap.

04

Methodology

Research philosophy, design, methods, sampling, data collection, analysis plan and ethics.

05

Results / findings

Your data presented clearly with tables, figures and, where relevant, statistical output.

06

Discussion

Interpretation of the findings against the literature, with implications and limitations.

07

Conclusion & recommendations

Your contribution, answers to the research questions, recommendations and directions for future research.

08

References & appendices

A complete, correctly formatted reference list plus supporting material such as instruments and transcripts.

How word count is typically shared

ChapterTypical share of the word count
IntroductionAbout 10%
Literature reviewAbout 25 to 30%
MethodologyAbout 15%
Results / findingsAbout 15 to 20%
DiscussionAbout 20 to 25%
ConclusionAbout 7 to 10%

These proportions are a common guide, not a rule. Always follow your university handbook and supervisor’s guidance.

Methodology

Dissertation research methodology

In short

Your methodology explains how you answer your research question and why those choices are sound. It sets out your research philosophy, your approach to reasoning, your research design and methods, how you sample and collect data, how you analyse it, and how you handle ethics. A clear, justified methodology is one of the biggest factors in a strong grade.

A convincing methodology chapter connects four layers, from broad assumptions down to the practical steps you took.

Research philosophy

The assumptions behind your study: positivism, interpretivism, pragmatism or critical realism. This shapes everything that follows.

Approach to reasoning

Deductive (testing existing theory) or inductive (building theory from data), and sometimes an abductive mix.

Design & strategy

Survey, experiment, case study, ethnography, grounded theory, action research or a systematic review.

Methods & ethics

Data collection instruments, sampling, analysis plan, validity and reliability, and research ethics approval.

Need this as a standalone piece? See our research proposal support, where the methodology is planned before you begin.

Qualitative

Qualitative dissertation research

In short

Qualitative research explores meaning, experience and context using non-numerical data such as interviews, focus groups, observation and documents. It answers “how” and “why” questions and is analysed by looking for patterns and themes rather than measuring variables.

Common methods

  • Semi-structured and in-depth interviews
  • Focus groups
  • Participant and non-participant observation
  • Document and policy analysis

Analysis & tools

  • Thematic and content analysis
  • Framework analysis and grounded theory
  • Coding and memoing
  • Software such as NVivo and ATLAS.ti
Quantitative

Quantitative dissertation research

In short

Quantitative research measures variables and tests relationships or differences using numerical data and statistics. It answers “how many”, “how much” and “what is the relationship” questions, and depends on sound sampling, valid measurement and the right statistical tests.

Common methods

  • Structured questionnaires and scales
  • Experiments and quasi-experiments
  • Analysis of existing or secondary datasets
  • Probability and non-probability sampling

Analysis & tools

  • Descriptive statistics and data visualisation
  • t-tests, ANOVA, correlation and regression
  • Chi-square and non-parametric tests
  • Reliability, factor analysis and SEM
  • Software such as SPSS, R, Excel, Stata and AMOS

For the numbers themselves, see our dissertation data analysis support below.

Mixed methods

Mixed-methods dissertations

In short

Mixed-methods research combines qualitative and quantitative data in one study so each offsets the other’s limits. The key is a clear reason for mixing and a plan for how the two strands are integrated, not simply run side by side.

The main mixed-methods designs differ in timing and in which strand leads.

Convergent parallel

Both strands run at the same time and are compared or merged at interpretation.

Explanatory sequential

Quantitative first, then qualitative to explain the numbers in depth.

Exploratory sequential

Qualitative first to build an instrument or theory, then quantitative to test it.

Embedded

One strand plays a supporting role within a design led by the other.

Data & sampling

Dissertation data collection and sampling

In short

Data collection is how you gather the evidence to answer your research question, and sampling is how you decide whom or what to study. Strong dissertations justify both: the instrument fits the question, and the sample is appropriate, ethical and clearly described.

Collecting data

  • Primary: surveys, interviews, experiments, observation
  • Secondary: existing datasets, records and archives
  • Instrument design and pilot testing
  • Validity, reliability and bias control

Research ethics

  • Informed consent and participant information sheets
  • Anonymity and data protection
  • Ethics committee applications
  • Handling sensitive data responsibly

Common sampling methods

FamilyMethodsTypically used when
ProbabilitySimple random, systematic, stratified, clusterYou need results that generalise to a wider population
Non-probabilityConvenience, purposive, snowball, quotaThe population is hard to reach or you want depth over generalisation
Data analysis

Dissertation data analysis and statistics

In short

Data analysis turns your raw data into findings that answer your research question. Qualitative data is analysed for themes and meaning; quantitative data is analysed with descriptive and inferential statistics. Choosing the right test for your question and reporting it correctly is essential for a defensible result.

Yes. We support students at Indian universities and at institutions across the UK, USA, Australia, Ireland, Germany, Malaysia, the UAE and 35+ countries, following each university’s guidelines, referencing style and formatting requirements.

Can you help with just one chapter?

Absolutely. Many students come to us for a single stage, a literature review, the methodology, or statistical analysis, while others want support across the full journey. You choose the scope; we quote per chapter or per project.

Which statistical tools do you work with?

SPSS, R, Python, Stata, NVivo, MATLAB, AMOS and SmartPLS, covering descriptive and inferential statistics, regression, SEM, qualitative coding and mixed-methods analysis, with clear visualisations and guided interpretation of your results.

Is the work original and checked for plagiarism?

Yes. Every deliverable is checked with Turnitin and Grammarly and delivered with a detailed originality report, so you can see exactly how your document stands before submission.

Will my thesis meet my university’s formatting requirements?

Yes. We format to your specific university’s guidelines, margins, spacing, pagination, tables of contents, figures and bibliography, in APA 7, MLA, Harvard, Chicago, IEEE, Vancouver or your institution’s house style.

How long does thesis support take?

It depends on scope: single chapters can often be supported within days, while full-thesis journeys run across your academic timeline. We confirm a realistic schedule up front and deliver milestone by milestone, on time.

How does pricing work?

Quotes are transparent and issued in writing before work begins, per chapter or as a fixed-scope package for the full project. You confirm with an advance payment, review each deliverable, and settle the balance on final delivery.

Do you help with viva or defence preparation?

Yes, presentation structuring, anticipated examiner questions and mock-defence guidance so you can defend your research with confidence.

Is my research kept confidential?

Always. Your topic, data, drafts and personal details are handled securely, never shared or resold, and an NDA is available on request, common for industry-partnered or embargoed research.

What is the difference between a thesis and a dissertation?

They describe the same kind of original research project, but the words are used differently by country. In the UK a dissertation is usually the master’s or undergraduate project and a thesis is the PhD project; in the United States a thesis is for a master’s and a dissertation is for a doctorate.

How do I choose a dissertation topic?

Start from your interests and the gaps in recent literature, then narrow to a question that is specific, researchable and realistic for your deadline and resources. We help you refine a broad idea into a focused, feasible topic.

How do I write a dissertation proposal?

A proposal sets out your working title, background, aim and objectives, research questions, a short literature review, your proposed methodology, a timeline and references. It proves the study is feasible before you begin the full write-up.

How many chapters does a dissertation have?

Most dissertations have five core chapters: Introduction, Literature Review, Methodology, Results or Findings, and Discussion and Conclusion, plus front matter, references and appendices. Some disciplines combine or reorder these.

How long should a dissertation be?

Length depends on level and university. As a rough guide, undergraduate dissertations are about 8,000 to 12,000 words, master’s dissertations about 15,000 to 25,000 words, and PhD theses often 60,000 to 100,000 words.

What methodology should I use for my dissertation?

It depends on your research question. Questions about meaning and experience suit qualitative methods; questions about measurement and relationships suit quantitative methods; some questions call for a mixed-methods design. We help you choose and justify the right approach.

What is the difference between qualitative and quantitative research?

Qualitative research explores meaning using non-numerical data such as interviews and is analysed for themes. Quantitative research measures variables using numerical data and is analysed with statistics. Mixed methods combine both.

What are mixed methods?

Mixed-methods research combines qualitative and quantitative data in a single study so each strand strengthens the other. The main designs are convergent, explanatory sequential, exploratory sequential and embedded.

How do I conduct a literature review?

Search academic databases systematically, appraise the sources critically, and synthesise them by theme rather than summarising one by one. A good review builds your theoretical framework and identifies a clear research gap.

What is a research gap?

A research gap is a specific question or problem that existing studies have not answered, or have not answered well. Your dissertation aims to address that gap, which is what makes the work original.

What is the difference between research aims and objectives?

The aim is the single overall purpose of your study. Objectives are the specific, measurable steps that, taken together, achieve that aim. A clear aim usually has three to five supporting objectives.

Which sampling method should I use?

Use probability sampling, such as random or stratified, when you need results that generalise to a wider population. Use non-probability sampling, such as purposive or convenience, when the population is hard to reach or you want depth over generalisation.

How do I analyse my dissertation data?

Qualitative data is coded and analysed for themes; quantitative data is analysed with descriptive statistics and the appropriate inferential tests. We help you prepare the data, run the analysis and write up the results correctly.

What statistical test should I use?

It depends on your question. Comparing two group means uses a t-test, three or more uses ANOVA, relationships between continuous variables use correlation, and predicting an outcome uses regression. We help you select and justify the test.

What is SPSS used for?

SPSS is statistical software widely used in dissertations to manage data and run tests such as t-tests, ANOVA, correlation, regression and factor analysis, and to produce tables and charts for your results chapter.

What is NVivo used for?

NVivo is software for qualitative analysis. It helps you organise interview transcripts, documents and other text, code them systematically and identify themes and patterns across your data.

Can I use AI to write my dissertation?

Most universities restrict or prohibit AI-generated writing, and it risks academic misconduct. Our work is produced by human specialists, not AI writing tools, so it reflects genuine research and passes originality checks.

How do I reduce my Turnitin similarity score?

High similarity usually comes from over-quoting, weak paraphrasing or missing citations. We rewrite in your own words, cite correctly and use only real sources, which lowers similarity while keeping your meaning intact.

What referencing style should I use?

Use the style your department requires. Common styles include APA, Harvard, MLA, Chicago, Vancouver, IEEE and OSCOLA. We format citations and the reference list precisely to your required style.

What is a viva voce?

A viva voce, or oral defence, is an examination where you present and defend your research to examiners. It tests your understanding of your own study, your choices, your contribution and its limitations.

How do I prepare for my dissertation defence?

Know your study inside out: your question, your methodology, your findings, your contribution and your limitations. We run mock vivas with likely questions so you can practise defending your work with confidence.

Do you write the whole dissertation for me?

We provide research support, guidance, model drafts and editing that you learn from and adapt. The work is original, correctly referenced and confidential, and you remain the author responsible for what you submit.

Can you help with an MBA, MSc or PhD dissertation?

Yes. We support undergraduate, master’s, MBA, MSc, MA and PhD projects, matching your work to a researcher who knows the conventions and expectations of your level and field.

Do you help with systematic reviews?

Yes. We support protocol-driven systematic and scoping reviews, including database searching, screening, PRISMA reporting, critical appraisal and synthesis, which are common in health and the social sciences.

What is a research philosophy?

A research philosophy is the set of assumptions behind your study, such as positivism, interpretivism, pragmatism or critical realism. It shapes your approach, design and methods, and is usually explained early in the methodology chapter.

What is the difference between the results and discussion chapters?

The results chapter presents your findings clearly and objectively, with tables and figures. The discussion interprets those findings, compares them with the literature and explains what they mean and why they matter.

I have already started, can you still help?

Yes. We can join at any stage, whether you need a single chapter, data analysis, editing, or help finishing and formatting a draft you have already begun.

How do I get started?

Send us your topic, level, country, requirements and deadline. We will review them, tell you exactly how we can help and what it involves, and agree the scope before any work begins.
