Section 05

How New Zealand Grades: Bands, GPA and Honours

Every New Zealand university marks out of 100, passes at 50 and converts your marks to a nine-point GPA. Knowing exactly where a paper sits on that scale is the difference between “it was fine” and “that was a B+ four marks short of an A-“.

GradeMarkGrade pointsWhat markers are rewarding at this band
A+90 to 1009Outstanding, independent thinking. Original argument, flawless referencing, publishable in places.
A85 to 898Excellent command of the literature with sustained critical analysis, not description.
A-80 to 847Very strong work. Clear argument, wide and current reading, accurate citation throughout.
B+75 to 796Good analysis with some evaluative depth. Usually loses marks on structure or referencing detail.
B70 to 745Solid, accurate and well organised, but more descriptive than critical.
B-65 to 694Competent coverage of the material with limited engagement beyond the set readings.
C+60 to 643Meets the brief. Gaps in evidence, argument or referencing consistency.
C55 to 592Adequate. Key ideas present but underdeveloped or loosely supported.
C-50 to 541The minimum pass. Learning outcomes just met.
D / EBelow 500Fail. The fail structure is the one thing that is not standard nationally, see below.
Your GPA is credit weighted. A 30 point paper counts twice as heavily as a 15 point paper, so one weak large paper moves your GPA more than two weak small ones. Most universities report an annual GPA, a level specific GPA and a cumulative GPA separately, and exclude Pass, Withdrawn, Incomplete and cross credited results from the calculation.

Where the eight universities actually differ

University of Auckland

Three fail grades, no E

Auckland splits failure into D+ (45 to 49), D (40 to 44) and D- (0 to 39). All are worth zero grade points. If you are reading advice that mentions an “E” at Auckland, it is not written for your university.

University of Canterbury

E is worth minus one

UC is the only NZ university where the lowest fail grade carries a negative grade point, so a failed paper actively pulls a UC GPA down rather than just diluting it. UC also states its bands to one decimal place, for example 85 to 89.9.

Otago, Victoria, Massey

The standard D and E split

Two fail grades: D for 40 to 49 and E for 0 to 39. Massey additionally labels its bands as First Class Pass (A range), Second Class Pass (B range) and Pass (C range) on transcripts.

Special result codes

AG, G, L, R, S, AE, X

Aegrotat passes appear as AG at Massey and G at Victoria. Victoria also has L for a compensation pass. Canterbury uses R for a Restricted Pass, which counts for everything except as a prerequisite, S for a Special Pass and X where dishonesty is recorded. Otago awards AE, an A+ with Distinction.

Honours classifications

ClassGPA requiredHow it is usually expressed
First Class Honours7.00 and aboveAn A- average or better across the honours year, including the research component.
Second Class Honours, Division I5.50 to 6.99Broadly a B+ average. Often the practical threshold for doctoral entry and scholarships.
Second Class Honours, Division II4.00 to 5.49Broadly a B to B- average.
Read your qualification regulations, not just the general scale. Auckland and Canterbury publish the GPA thresholds above, and AUT states the same bands in letter grade language (First Class within the A range, Division I within B+, Division II from B to B-). Individual qualification regulations can and do override the general rule, and law schools in particular often classify on an aggregate mark rather than a GPA.

Points, credits and workload

One point is ten hours

Points and credits mean the same thing in New Zealand. One point represents roughly ten notional hours of total work, so a 15 point paper is planned around 150 hours including your own reading and writing.

120 points is a full year

A standard full time year is 120 points, which equals 1.0 EFTS (Equivalent Full Time Student). A three year bachelor’s degree is 360 points, with at least 72 at Level 7.

Why this matters for planning

When we scope your support we work backwards from the point value. A 30 point capstone is not “a long essay”, it is a quarter of your academic year, and it gets planned that way.

Section 06

AI, Plagiarism and Academic Integrity in New Zealand, and How We Maintain It

This is the part of the process most services keep vague. We would rather be specific, because in New Zealand the rules changed fast between 2024 and 2026, and most of the advice students are given online is now simply out of date.

First, the two Turnitin numbers are not the same thing

Similarity ReportAI Writing Indicator
What it measuresThe percentage of your text that matches sources already in Turnitin’s databases: the web, published journals and previously submitted student papers. The percentage of qualifying prose a model predicts could have been generated by AI, or paraphrased by an AI tool.
How it worksDeterministic text matching. Run it twice and you get the same answer.A probabilistic prediction. It is an estimate, not a measurement.
What a high number provesNothing on its own. Turnitin’s own position is that it does not check for plagiarism, it identifies matching text.Nothing on its own. Turnitin states it should not be the sole basis for action against a student.
Common innocent causesCorrectly quoted and cited passages, your reference list, the assignment question, standard methods sections and fixed technical phrasing.Formulaic academic register, simple sentence structure, heavily edited drafts, and writing by people whose first language is not English.
There is no official “safe” similarity percentage. Anywhere. Not at Turnitin, and not at any New Zealand university we could find publishing one. Turnitin says plainly that there is no fixed score to aim for and that every school, lecturer and assignment can treat a different amount of matching text as acceptable. The figures that circulate in student forums, usually “under 15 percent” or “under 20 percent”, are folklore. What your marker actually looks at is where the matches are and whether they are cited, not the number on the front page.

Most New Zealand universities have stopped trusting AI detectors

This is the single most important thing to understand about AI and assessment in Aotearoa right now, and it cuts both ways.

September 2025

Massey switched AI detection off

Massey disabled Turnitin’s AI detection on Stream, stating that significant concerns had been raised about the reliability of the approach, and that it wanted to build a culture that values assessment as learning and avoids unnecessary surveillance.

University of Auckland

Never adopted it

Auckland does not endorse automated AI detection tools, having considered and rejected the idea some years ago on the basis that it was not worth it.

Victoria University of Wellington

Does not use detection software

Victoria has confirmed it does not run AI detection software, relying instead on assessment design, in person tasks and academic judgement.

AUT

Integrity by design, not by detection

AUT’s stated approach is that integrity is upheld through intentional assessment design that assures learning, rather than through reliance on invigilation, declarations or detection.

What this means for you. Two things. First, a detector score is far less likely to be the thing that gets you into trouble than it was two years ago. Second, and much more importantly, universities replaced detection with methods that are considerably harder to fake: in person and oral assessment, document version history checks, comparison against your earlier work, and direct conversations with your lecturer about how you produced the piece. Being able to explain your own argument out loud now matters more than any percentage. We could not verify the current position at Otago, Canterbury, Waikato and Lincoln, so treat your own course outline as the authority.

What each university says about using generative AI

UniversityGoverning documentDefault position when the course outline is silent
AucklandStudent Academic Conduct Statute, plus guidelines on academic misconduct, poor academic practice, contract cheating and permitted softwareA two lane model. In invigilated exams, orals and practicals AI is restricted by default. In essays, reports and presentations use is not restricted, and the student who prompts is treated as the author. From 2027 every course must label each assessment as one lane or the other.
AUTAssessment design guidance and academic integrity policyA two channel model mirroring Auckland. Invigilated assessment does not permit AI tools, other assessment does.
MasseyGenerative Artificial Intelligence in Assessment Policy, plus the Academic Integrity PolicyProhibited unless explicitly allowed. Four named levels are set per assessment: NO AI, AI PLANNING, AI COLLABORATION and AI EXPLORATION. The strictest disclosure regime in the country, potentially including your prompts and your document version history.
WaikatoStudent Discipline RegulationsProhibited unless explicitly permitted, with permissions published through the Paper Outline Tool on Moodle. Unapproved use is misconduct.
Victoria (VUW)Generative Artificial Intelligence Policy, effective February 2025, plus the Student Academic Integrity RegulationProhibited unless authorised. Unauthorised use to substantially complete any component of coursework is treated as potential academic misconduct.
CanterburyStudent Code of Conduct and academic misconduct regulationsEntirely course dependent, ranging from fully excluded to unrestricted or even required. Where AI is used, disclosure is mandatory and must describe how it was used.
OtagoAcademic Integrity Policy and Student Academic Misconduct ProceduresCourse dependent. Staff must state which tools are allowed and why, and unacceptable use is treated as academic misconduct.
LincolnAcademic Integrity Policy and ProcedureBinary per assessment. Where permitted, take home work needs a cover page declaration naming the tools, describing the use and listing the prompts. Unauthorised use is classified under ghost writing.
The pattern worth memorising. No New Zealand university operates a blanket ban or a blanket permission. Every one of them delegates the decision to the paper or course coordinator, and the course outline is the operative document. Course specific instruction always beats general university guidance, and general guidance always beats anything you read on the internet, including this page. Most policies also separate poor academic practice, meaning a genuine referencing mistake with no dishonest intent, from academic dishonesty. A first sloppy citation is usually not treated as cheating.

How we maintain originality on every piece of work

1

We start from your rules, not ours

Before anything is written we take your course outline, your rubric, your referencing style and your university’s integrity and AI position. If your paper sits in a no AI band, that constrains the entire engagement.

2

Source first research

Every claim is traced to a real, checkable source that we have actually read. No invented citations, no fabricated data, no references to papers that do not exist. This is a hard rule and it is not negotiable.

3

Written from scratch, every time

Nothing is recycled from a previous student’s work, and we keep no library of pre written essays to resell. Work delivered to you is never delivered to anyone else, which is what keeps it out of the student paper database that flags the next person.

4

Referencing built and checked entry by entry

Citations and the reference list are built in your required style, then checked back against each source individually. This is where most easy marks are lost and it is the cheapest place to gain them.

5

Similarity checked before it reaches you

A similarity report is run before delivery and the matched text is reviewed line by line, not just glanced at as a number. Quoted and cited matches stay. Uncited overlap gets rewritten or properly attributed.

6

Explained, not just handed over

You receive the report with the work, plus a short walk through of the argument and the sources, so you can defend the piece in a tutorial, a viva or an integrity meeting. If you cannot explain it, it has not been delivered properly.

What we will and will not do

What we do

  • Tutoring, structural feedback and worked explanation of difficult material
  • Model answers and exemplars that show you how a band is reached
  • Research support, literature searching and source evaluation
  • Editing and proofreading of work you have written
  • Referencing correction and reference list construction in any NZ style
  • Statistical analysis with the method explained so you can defend it
  • Thesis and dissertation coaching chapter by chapter, at your pace
  • A similarity report and a plain English explanation of what it shows

What we will not do

  • Sit an invigilated exam, online test or proctored assessment for you
  • Log in to your university account, Canvas, Moodle, Stream or Blackboard
  • Submit work to your university on your behalf
  • Resell work already delivered to another student
  • Invent citations, sources, participants or data
  • Help you falsify a declaration about AI use, or write your prompt log for you
  • Claim we can guarantee a specific grade or a specific similarity percentage
  • Tell you that a detector score is something we can control
If you are wrongly accused of using AI. It happens, and it happens disproportionately to students writing in a second language, because plain, well structured, unadorned academic prose is exactly what these models score as machine like. Keep your evidence as you go rather than trying to reconstruct it afterwards: work in a document with version history switched on, keep your notes, outlines and reading annotations, keep the drafts, and keep the messages where you discussed the assignment. Then ask, politely and in writing, what specific evidence the concern is based on. Turnitin itself says its indicator requires further scrutiny and human judgement, and suppresses scores between 1 and 19 percent because false positives are more common there. That is a reasonable thing to put in front of an integrity committee.

End-to-end support for NZ students

Studying in New Zealand? Let’s get your work sorted.

Tell us your university, your paper, the referencing style and your due date. We’ll match you with the right subject expert, plan around New Zealand time and deliver original, well-referenced work with time to review.

Why NZ students choose us

Local knowledge, global standards

Every university covered

All 8 universities plus polytechnics, ITPs and wānanga — we know their conventions and expectations.

NZ referencing done right

APA 7th by default, plus every other style, applied accurately so you don’t lose easy marks.

Guidance, not shortcuts

Original, tutor-led work that teaches you the material and respects academic integrity.

Section 08

The New Zealand Academic Vocabulary, Decoded

If you have studied anywhere else, several of these words mean something different here. Getting them wrong in an email to your coordinator is a small thing that reads badly.

Paper (or course)

What other systems call a module or a unit. Waikato, Otago and Massey say “paper”. Auckland, Victoria and Canterbury say “course”. Both are correct, in the right place.

Points and credits

The same thing. One point is roughly ten hours of total work, 120 points is a full time year, and 120 points equals 1.0 EFTS.

Trimester and semester

Victoria and Waikato run three trimesters of about twelve weeks. Auckland, Otago, Canterbury and Massey run two semesters plus a summer school. Not a national standard.

Prescription

The official published description of a paper’s content and learning outcomes. If a marker says your essay was “outside the prescription”, this is the document they mean.

Internal assessment

Everything that counts toward your final grade other than the formal examination: essays, tests, labs, presentations, portfolios. The assessment weighting tells you the split.

Aegrotat

Consideration for an assessment you missed because of illness, injury, bereavement or a family emergency. Appears as AG at Massey and G at Victoria.

Impaired performance

Consideration where you did sit the assessment but performed below your normal standard. The difference from aegrotat is participation: absent versus present but impaired.

Special consideration

The umbrella term increasingly replacing the pair above. Criteria and deadlines vary by university, so check yours rather than assuming, for example Massey requires the assessment to be worth at least ten percent and applications within two weeks.

NZQCF

The New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework, renamed from the NZQF in 2022 when micro credentials were added. Many university documents still say NZQF. Same framework, Levels 1 to 10.

NZQA and CUAP

NZQA owns the framework and quality assures non university providers. Universities NZ holds delegated approval powers and works through CUAP, the Committee on University Academic Programmes, which meets twice a year.

NCEA

The National Certificate of Educational Achievement, the standards based secondary qualification at Levels 1 to 3 and the main university entrance pathway. A replacement structure has been agreed with rollout from 2028 to 2030, so NCEA remains the operative qualification for everyone currently at university.

Wananga

A Maori tertiary institution where learning is grounded in kaupapa Maori and ahuatanga Maori. There are three, and all award qualifications up to doctoral level.

Kaupapa Maori

A Maori led, Maori centred approach grounded in Maori values, knowledge and worldview. As a research methodology it means research by Maori, with Maori and for Maori, not simply research about Maori topics.

Te Tiriti o Waitangi

The 1840 founding constitutional document. “Te Tiriti” specifically denotes the Maori text, which differs materially from the English “Treaty” text. Which one you cite is a scholarly decision, not a formatting one.

Capstone

A final year integrative paper or project that pulls the degree together, often applied or client facing. Usually high point value, so plan it as a quarter of your year.

Restricted Pass

A Canterbury result code, R, which passes the paper for every purpose except as a prerequisite for a later paper. Worth knowing before you plan next year’s enrolment.

On citing matauranga Maori. If your work draws on kaumatua korero, purakau or iwi and hapu knowledge, be aware that no New Zealand university library guide we could find publishes a settled citation format for it, and standard APA “personal communication” treatment is widely considered inadequate. This is handled through relationship and permission rather than formatting: consent from the knowledge holder, correct attribution of iwi and hapu affiliation, and acknowledgement of the mana of the source. Talk to your subject librarian or your Maori Studies staff before you decide how to reference it. We will work to whatever your department advises.
FAQs

New Zealand academic help — frequently asked questions

Do you cover all universities in New Zealand?
Yes. We support students at all 8 New Zealand universities — Auckland, AUT, Waikato, Massey, Victoria University of Wellington, Canterbury, Lincoln and Otago — as well as polytechnics, institutes of technology and wānanga.
Which referencing style do you use for New Zealand assignments?
APA 7th edition is the most widely used style in New Zealand, and we also work in Harvard, MLA, Chicago, IEEE, Vancouver and the New Zealand Law Style Guide — whichever your course requires.
Are you familiar with NZQF and NZQA standards?
Yes. We align work to the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (Levels 1–10) and university academic standards, from certificates and diplomas through to bachelor, honours, master’s and doctoral level.
Can you work in the New Zealand time zone?
Yes. We plan deadlines around New Zealand time (NZST/NZDT) so your work is delivered well before your due date, wherever you are in the country.
Will the work be original and pass Turnitin?
Yes. Every piece is original, correctly referenced and checked for similarity, in line with New Zealand universities’ academic-integrity policies and Turnitin.
Which subjects do you help with?
All major disciplines studied in New Zealand — nursing and health, business and MBA, accounting and finance, engineering, IT and computer science, law, education, agriculture and environmental science, psychology, sciences and social sciences.
What levels of study do you support?
Everything from foundation certificates and diplomas to undergraduate, honours, postgraduate and PhD research across the NZQF.
How do I get started?
Message us on WhatsApp with your university, paper, referencing style and due date, and we’ll share a plan and a quote.
Do you use AI to write my assignment?
No. Work is researched and written by a subject specialist, from sources we have actually read, and it is never generated and handed over. Where your university permits AI for a specific assessment, we will tell you what it permits and help you use and declare it correctly, because Massey, Lincoln and Canterbury in particular require you to describe how it was used and sometimes to list your prompts.
What similarity percentage is safe in New Zealand?
There isn’t one. Turnitin publishes no threshold and we could not find a New Zealand university that publishes one either. Every figure you see quoted online is folklore. What your marker looks at is where the matches sit and whether they are cited, not the number on the cover. A 25 percent report that is all correctly quoted and referenced material is fine, a 6 percent report with one uncited paraphrased paragraph is not.
Will Turnitin flag my work as AI written?
Several New Zealand universities no longer run AI detection at all. Massey switched it off in September 2025, and Auckland and Victoria have confirmed they do not use it. Where it is still in use, Turnitin itself states the indicator should not be the sole basis for action against a student, and it suppresses scores between 1 and 19 percent because false positives are more common in that range. Keep your drafts, notes and document version history as you go, which is the evidence that actually settles these conversations.
Is using your service against my university’s academic integrity policy?
Tutoring, feedback, editing, proofreading, referencing correction and research coaching are permitted at every New Zealand university, and several, including Waikato, pre approve external writing support tools. What is prohibited everywhere is submitting someone else’s work as your own, which is why we do not sit assessments, do not log in to your account, do not submit on your behalf and do not resell delivered work. Your course outline is the operative document, and if it restricts outside assistance for a specific assessment, tell us and we will scope the support to what it allows.
How does the New Zealand grading scale work?
Marks run out of 100 with a pass at 50, converted to a nine point GPA from A+ at 9 down to C- at 1. The pass bands are the same across all eight universities. The fail structure is not: Auckland uses D+, D and D- with no E grade, and Canterbury’s E carries minus one grade point, which can pull a UC GPA below zero. Section 05 above sets out the full scale.
