Know your CGPA

Understanding the Malaysian grading system

Malaysian universities grade on a 4.00 CGPA scale, and your cumulative CGPA determines your degree classification at graduation. Here’s how the classes typically map.

3.67–4.00
First Class

Kelas Pertama — excellent

3.00–3.66
Second Upper

Kelas Kedua Tinggi

2.30–2.99
Second Lower

Kelas Kedua Rendah

2.00–2.29
Third Class

Kelas Ketiga — pass

Grades run from A (4.00) down through A−, B+, B and so on, and most institutions require a minimum CGPA of 2.00 to remain in good standing — with 3.00 or above typically needed for postgraduate entry. Exact bands vary between universities, so always check your faculty handbook.

Quick glossary

Malaysian academic terms, explained

MQA & MQF

The Malaysian Qualifications Agency accredits programmes, and the MQF places every Malaysian award on a level from 1 to 8 so standards are clear and comparable.

IPTA vs IPTS

IPTA are public universities funded by the government; IPTS are private universities and colleges — both MQA-accredited but often different in structure and calendar.

Final Year Project (FYP)

The capstone research or build project in your last year of a bachelor’s degree — usually split across two semesters (FYP 1 and FYP 2) and heavily weighted.

CGPA & GPA

Your GPA is the grade-point average for one semester; your CGPA is cumulative across your whole programme on the 4.00 scale.

Twinning & 3+0 Programmes

Partnership degrees awarded by an overseas university. Twinning splits study between Malaysia and abroad; 3+0 completes the full foreign degree locally.

Semester vs Trimester

Public universities usually run two semesters a year; many private institutions use three shorter trimesters, which compresses deadlines significantly.

Where you study

The Malaysian institutions we support

Public research universities, MTUN technical universities, the private sector and the international branch campuses each run different regulations, different similarity rules and different classification thresholds. We work across all four.

Research universities

Universiti Malaya (UM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). Heaviest on thesis structure, similarity thresholds and journal-ready writing.

Comprehensive and focused public universities

UiTM, IIUM, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, UNIMAS, UPSI, USIM, UniSZA, UMK, UMT and UPNM, plus the MTUN technical group: UTeM, UTHM, UMPSA and UniMAP. Strong Final Year Project and industrial training requirements.

Private universities and colleges

Taylor’s, Sunway, UCSI, Multimedia University, UNITEN, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, UTAR, TAR UMT, IMU, MSU, APU, INTI, HELP, SEGi and MAHSA. Often twinning or franchise programmes, so two sets of conventions can apply to one assignment.

International branch campuses

Monash Malaysia, Nottingham Malaysia, Heriot-Watt Malaysia, Xiamen University Malaysia, Curtin Malaysia, Swinburne Sarawak, Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia, Reading Malaysia and Southampton Malaysia. These follow the home institution’s regulations, not the Malaysian ones, which changes the referencing style and the classification scale.

The branch campus trap. If you study at Monash Malaysia or Nottingham Malaysia, your grading, classification and academic integrity rules are Australian and British respectively, not Malaysian. Students regularly send us a Malaysian CGPA brief for work that will actually be marked against an Australian High Distinction band or a British First. Tell us which regulations apply and we will work to the right one.

Integrity, in detail

AI, plagiarism and academic integrity in Malaysia, and how we maintain it

Malaysia is the most centrally directed of the countries we work in: there is a national guideline on generative AI, Turnitin is close to universal, and the declaration culture is the most documented in the region.

The two Turnitin numbers are not the same thing

Similarity report

The percentage of your text that matches sources already in Turnitin’s databases: the web, published journals and previously submitted student papers. It is deterministic text matching, so it gives the same answer twice. Turnitin’s own position is that it does not check for plagiarism, it identifies matching text. High scores routinely come from correctly quoted and cited passages, your reference list, the assignment question itself and standard methods sections.

AI writing indicator

The percentage of qualifying prose a model predicts could have been generated or paraphrased by AI. It is a probabilistic estimate, not a measurement. Turnitin states it should not be the sole basis for action against a student, and suppresses scores between 1 and 19 per cent because false positives are more common there. Plain, well-structured academic prose and writing by people whose first language is not English are the classic false positives.

There is no official safe similarity percentage. Turnitin publishes no threshold and says plainly that every institution, marker and assignment can treat a different amount of matching text as acceptable. The figures that circulate in student forums, usually under 15 or under 20 per cent, are folklore. What your marker actually looks at is where the matches sit and whether they are cited, not the number on the cover page.

Where Malaysia stands

Malaysia has a national AI guideline

The Ministry of Higher Education, through JPT, issued the Garis Panduan Penggunaan Teknologi Kecerdasan Buatan Generatif dalam Pengajaran dan Pembelajaran Pendidikan Tinggi in 2024. It requires institutions to state clearly when and how AI may be used ethically, requires appropriate crediting and a clear referencing method for AI-generated content, names Turnitin explicitly, and pushes assessment redesign toward viva voce, presentations, interviews and continuous assessment.

MQA sets the framework, and it just changed

MQA operates under the Malaysian Qualifications Agency Act 2007 and maintains the MQF and the Malaysian Qualifications Register. Its Guidelines to Good Practices: Assessment of Student Learning, second edition November 2023, requires providers to define academic integrity, provide plagiarism detection and set clear disciplinary consequences. The second edition of the MQF itself came into force on 1 August 2026, so check current level descriptors rather than older material.

No criminal ban on essay mills

Unlike Australia, England and Ireland, Malaysia has no statute criminalising the sale of academic work. It is handled through university discipline instead, under the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 and the Educational Institutions (Discipline) Act 1976, operationalised through each institution’s student discipline rules. The consequence is institutional, and it can run as far as revocation of the qualification.

Permitted with conditions, and declared

UTM’s guidelines, effective 27 March 2024, permit generative AI but require disclosure, and state that undisclosed use can be categorised as plagiarism. They prescribe a citation format down to developer, tool name, version and retrieval date. Universiti Malaya’s policy, released March 2026, lets the lecturer specify the permitted level per assessment and requires students to acknowledge how the tool was used and verify the output.

Turnitin is effectively compulsory here

More so than in any other country on this list. UTHM made thesis similarity checks compulsory for all postgraduate research students from 1 March 2024. The national guideline itself recommends institutions limit the similarity index. UiTM is the notable exception, having moved from Turnitin to Ouriginal in 2022 and stating there is no cut-off percentage, though Ouriginal’s discontinuation in mid-2026 will have forced a change.

The most documented declaration culture

UPM’s Graduate School requires a signed form in which the student declares AI was an assistive writing tool and not a substitute for their own thinking, confirms they reviewed all output and accept full responsibility, and itemises the purpose of use, the chapters and page numbers affected, and the specific tools used. If you are writing a thesis in Malaysia, assume you will have to account for this in writing.

CGPA, classification and MQF levels

A+ and A are 4.00, A− 3.70, B+ 3.30, B 3.00, B− 2.70, C+ 2.30, C 2.00, and below 50 per cent is a fail. First Class typically needs a CGPA of 3.70 or above, Second Upper 3.00 to 3.69, Second Lower from about 2.30. Thresholds are set by each institution, and private colleges sometimes use Distinction, Merit and Honours instead of class labels. MQF Level 6 is the bachelor’s degree, Level 7 the master’s and Level 8 the doctorate.

How we maintain originality on every piece of work

1

We start from your rules, not ours

Before anything is written we take your course outline and assessment brief, your rubric, your referencing style and your institution’s integrity and AI position. If your assessment sits in a no-AI band, that constrains the whole engagement.

2

Source first research

Every claim is traced to a real, checkable source that we have actually read. No invented citations, no fabricated data, no references to papers that do not exist. This is a hard rule and it is not negotiable.

3

Written from scratch, every time

Nothing is recycled from a previous student’s work and we keep no library of pre-written essays to resell. Work delivered to you is never delivered to anyone else, which is what keeps it out of the student paper database that flags the next person.

4

Referencing built and checked entry by entry

Citations and the reference list are built in APA 7, Harvard, IEEE, Vancouver or your faculty’s prescribed style, then checked back against each source individually. This is where most easy marks are lost and the cheapest place to gain them.

5

Similarity checked before it reaches you

A similarity report is run before delivery and the matched text is reviewed line by line, not glanced at as a number. Quoted and cited matches stay. Uncited overlap is rewritten or properly attributed.

6

Explained, not just handed over

You receive the report with the work, plus a short walk-through of the argument and the sources, so you can defend the piece in a tutorial, a viva or an integrity meeting. If you cannot explain it, it has not been delivered properly.

What we will and will not do

What we do

✓Tutoring, structural feedback and worked explanation of difficult material

✓Model answers and exemplars that show how a top band is actually reached

✓Research support, literature searching and source evaluation

✓Editing and proofreading of work you have written

✓Referencing correction and reference list construction in APA 7, Harvard, IEEE, Vancouver or your faculty’s prescribed style

✓Statistical analysis with the method explained so you can defend it

✓Thesis and dissertation coaching chapter by chapter, at your pace

✓A similarity report and a plain-English explanation of what it shows

What we will not do

✕Sit an invigilated exam, online test or proctored assessment for you

✕Log in to your university account or learning management system

✕Submit work to your institution on your behalf

✕Resell work already delivered to another student

✕Invent citations, sources, participants or data

✕Help you falsify a declaration about AI use, or write your prompt log for you

✕Claim we can guarantee a specific grade or a specific similarity percentage

✕Tell you that a detector score is something we can control

If you are wrongly accused of using AI. It happens, and it happens disproportionately to students writing in a second language, because plain, well-structured, unadorned academic prose is exactly what these models score as machine-like. Keep your evidence as you go rather than reconstructing it afterwards: work in a document with version history switched on, keep your notes, outlines and reading annotations, keep the drafts, and keep the messages where you discussed the assignment. Then ask, politely and in writing, what specific evidence the concern is based on. Turnitin itself states its AI indicator should not be the sole basis for action against a student, and suppresses scores between 1 and 19 per cent because false positives are more common there. UiTM’s own library guidance puts the underlying principle well: a percentage does not equal plagiarism.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What academic services do you offer for students in Malaysia?

We provide complete academic support — assignments and coursework, Final Year Projects, dissertations, PhD thesis and research assistance, data and statistical analysis, editing and proofreading, referencing, software coding and journal publication support — all structured to Malaysian university and MQF standards.

Do you cover both public (IPTA) and private (IPTS) universities?

Yes. We support students at public universities, private universities and colleges, university colleges, polytechnics and international branch campuses across Malaysia — including Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Penang, Johor Bahru, Melaka, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu — following each faculty’s course outline and rubric.

Can you help with my Final Year Project (FYP)?

Yes, and it’s one of our most requested services in Malaysia. We support the full FYP journey across FYP 1 and FYP 2 — proposal, scope, literature review, methodology, implementation, testing, results, and the final report and presentation your faculty requires.

Which referencing style will you use?

Whichever your course requires. APA 7 is the most widely used style in Malaysia, and we also work in Harvard, IEEE for engineering and IT, Vancouver for health sciences, Chicago and MLA — plus any faculty-specific thesis format guide your university publishes.

Is the work original and plagiarism-free?

Absolutely. Every project is prepared by expert minds, checked with leading originality tools, and delivered with a Turnitin AI and plagiarism report so you can see the quality and originality for yourself.

How does the Malaysian CGPA system work?

Malaysian universities grade on a 4.00 CGPA scale. Degree classes typically fall as First Class (3.67–4.00), Second Class Upper (3.00–3.66), Second Class Lower (2.30–2.99) and Third Class (2.00–2.29). Most institutions require a minimum CGPA of 2.00 to stay in good standing, and 3.00 or above for postgraduate entry.

Do you support twinning, 3+0 and branch campus programmes?

Yes. Many Malaysian students study for a UK or Australian award locally through twinning or 3+0 arrangements. We support these programmes and follow the awarding university’s referencing style, structure and marking standards.

How fast can you help me?

We work around the clock and take on urgent deadlines in Malaysian time. Timelines depend on length and complexity, but we’re built for speed and always confirm a realistic deadline before we begin.

How do payments work?

After you confirm your quote, you make a secure advance payment so we can assign your expert and begin. You review the work, request any revisions, and settle the balance on final delivery. Pricing is transparent, student-friendly and quoted upfront in Ringgit with no hidden costs.

Is my information kept confidential?

Always. Your documents, data and personal details are handled securely, never shared or resold, and kept strictly confidential.

How do I get started?

Message us on WhatsApp at +91 90525 28183 or +91 81219 76048, or email info@swiftacademicservices.com with your requirements and deadline. We usually respond in under 30 minutes.

Do you use AI to write my assignment?
No. Work is researched and written by a subject specialist from sources we have actually read, and it is never generated and handed over. Where your institution permits AI for a specific assessment, we will tell you what is permitted and help you use and declare it correctly. UTM treats undisclosed AI use as plagiarism, and UPM requires a signed declaration form itemising tools, chapters and page numbers for theses.
What similarity percentage is safe?
There is no such number. Turnitin publishes no threshold and states that every institution, marker and assignment can treat a different amount of matching text as acceptable. What your marker looks at is where the matches sit and whether they are cited. A 25 per cent report that is all correctly quoted and referenced material is fine; a 6 per cent report with one uncited paraphrased paragraph is not.
Is using your service against my institution’s academic integrity policy?
Tutoring, feedback, editing, proofreading, referencing correction and research coaching are permitted everywhere we work. What is prohibited is submitting someone else’s work as your own, which is why we do not sit assessments, do not log in to your account, do not submit on your behalf and do not resell delivered work. Malaysia handles this through university discipline under the UUCA 1971 rather than criminal law, and the sanctions can run as far as revocation of the qualification. Your course outline and assessment brief is the operative document, and if it restricts outside assistance for a particular assessment, tell us and we will scope the support to what it allows.
