What is a DrillBit plagiarism report?

DrillBit is a plagiarism detection system used widely by Indian universities and colleges. Many institutions have adopted it as their standard originality check for theses, dissertations, project reports and journal submissions, which is why so many students are asked for a DrillBit report rather than any other kind.

DrillBit produces two separate reports, and most departments now ask for both. The similarity report is the long standing one, and the AI content detection report is the newer companion to it. This page covers both, because we provide both.

The similarity report is a PDF with two distinct parts. The first page is a summary: your submission details, the overall similarity percentage shown against a colour scale, a breakdown of where the matches came from, and the exclusion settings that were applied when the check was run. The second page is the similarity report proper: your percentage, the number of matched sources, your letter grade, and a numbered table listing every matched domain or document with the percentage it contributed.

The letter grade is the part that matters most to students, because it is the thing supervisors react to. DrillBit converts the raw percentage into a band from A to D, and most departments have a rule tied to those bands rather than to the number itself.

The AI content detection report is a different document with a different method. Instead of matching your text against sources, it estimates how much of your writing carries the statistical patterns of machine generated text, and it breaks your document into blocks so you can see where the score came from. The two percentages are independent of each other.

In short

A DrillBit report is a PDF showing how much of your document matches existing sources, where those matches came from, and a letter grade from A to D based on the percentage. A is 0 to 10 percent, B is 11 to 40, C is 41 to 60, and D is 61 to 100.

DrillBit grade bands explained

DrillBit converts your similarity percentage into a letter. This is the figure most supervisors look at first.

ASatisfactory0 to 10%

Accepted almost everywhere. Matches are normally references, standard definitions and correctly quoted material. Nothing to fix.

BUpgrade11 to 40%

Very common on real theses. Often acceptable, but worth checking that matched passages are cited and that no single source dominates.

CPoor41 to 60%

Usually sent back. Typically caused by heavy quoting, patch writing from a few sources, or an uncited literature section.

DUnacceptable61 to 100%

Will be rejected. Large blocks are tracking to existing sources, or a previous submission of the same work is matching against itself.

In short

Most Indian universities want grade A or B, and many set their own ceiling at 10, 15 or 20 percent regardless of the letter. Check your department handbook, because the institutional rule always overrides the generic band.

One caution worth knowing: a high percentage is not automatically misconduct. If your own earlier draft or synopsis was submitted to DrillBit before, your new file can match it heavily. That is a self match, and it is resolved by asking your institution to exclude the earlier submission rather than by rewriting anything.

What the report actually shows

Where your matches come from

DrillBit sorts every match into one of three source types, and each one means something different for your defence.

Source typeWhat it coversWhat it usually means for you
Internet DataPublic web pages DrillBit has crawled, including blogs, college sites, news and document sharing sites.Often standard definitions and background text. Easy to fix by rewriting in your own words and citing a proper academic source instead.
Journal / PublicationJournals, books, conference proceedings and indexed repositories such as Shodhganga.Common in literature reviews. Acceptable when cited properly, a problem when lifted without attribution.
Student PaperTheses, dissertations and project reports previously submitted to DrillBit by any institution in the network.Check this one first. A large match here is frequently your own earlier draft, or a report a senior shared with you.

Database selection changes your result

Before a check runs, four databases can be switched on or off: student papers, journals and publishers, internet or web, and the institution repository. Two checks of the same file with different databases selected will not return the same percentage.

This is the single most common reason a student gets one figure from a friend’s account and a different figure from their department.

Exclusion settings change it too

  • Quotes. Excluded or not. Leaving quotes in can add several percent on a quote heavy chapter.
  • References and bibliography. Usually excluded. If they are not, a long reference list inflates the score badly.
  • Sources under 14 words. Excluding these removes trivial phrase matches.
  • Excluded sources and phrases. Specific sources can be removed, which is how a self match is handled.
What we do about this. We tell you exactly which settings were used on your check, and we match them to whatever your department specifies. If your university requires the bibliography excluded and quotes included, that is how we run it, so the figure you see is the figure they will see.

What the AI report measures

The AI report estimates how much of your writing shows the statistical patterns of machine generated text. It is not looking for matches against sources, which is what the similarity report does. A document can return a low similarity percentage and a high AI percentage, or the reverse, because the two checks are answering completely different questions.

The parts of the report

  • AI text detected. The headline percentage, with the number of words carrying an AI pattern signal.
  • Position on scale. Where that figure sits on a 0 to 100 percent range.
  • Submission information. Author, submission ID, document type, language, and the page and sentence count.
  • Content composition. The split between human written, AI text and manually excluded content, colour matched to the highlighting in your document.
  • Block level analysis. Your document divided into blocks, each with its sentence count, word count and AI matched percentage.
  • Highlighted document. Every flagged sentence marked in blue so you can see exactly what triggered the score.
In short

The DrillBit AI report is separate from the similarity report. It estimates the percentage of your text showing AI-generated patterns, splits your document into human written, AI text and excluded content, and shows a block by block breakdown so you can see which sections caused the score.

Block level analysis

Rather than one number for the whole document, DrillBit breaks your file into blocks and scores each one. This is the most useful part of the report, because it tells you where to look.

Excluded rows are marked in yellow and are left out of the AI score entirely.

When we send your report we tell you which blocks carry the score and what is in them, so you are not rewriting an entire thesis because of two paragraphs in the introduction.

How AI detection actually works

DrillBit describes its approach as combining established AI detection methods, including perplexity analysis, burstiness measurement and stylometric profiling, with its own techniques. Those terms sound opaque, so here is what they mean in practice.

  • Perplexity measures how predictable your next word is. Machine generated text tends to be more predictable than human writing.
  • Burstiness measures variation in sentence length and rhythm. Humans write in bursts: a long sentence, then a short one. Models tend to even out.
  • Stylometric profiling looks at your writing fingerprint: word choice, punctuation habits and structural tics.

On top of those, DrillBit says it evaluates the hierarchy of writing, meaning how ideas are organised and progress; the composition pattern, meaning sentence structure, transitions and recurring constructions; word prioritisation, meaning the order, weight and placement of key terms; and the technical composition of the document, meaning formatting consistency and structural uniformity.

Why scores vary across tools

Detection systems differ in features, training data and scoring rules, so variation between them is expected. The same file can return one figure from DrillBit and a very different one from another tool, and neither is necessarily wrong. This is also why a score from a free online checker tells you very little about what your university will see.

What the score is, and is not

It is a statistical estimate of pattern, not proof of authorship. DrillBit positions the report as an evidentiary foundation for a reviewer, designed to identify sections warranting closer examination, with the final decision resting with that reviewer alongside drafts, prior work and supporting material. No detector can measure intent.

In short

AI detection scores statistical patterns, not authorship. Formal, translated or template based writing can produce elevated signals in any system, which is why the report is meant to guide a human reviewer rather than decide the matter on its own.

Why genuine writing gets flagged

  • Heavy use of a grammar or rewriting tool, which smooths out natural sentence variation
  • Writing in a second language, or drafting in one language and translating into English
  • Formulaic academic phrasing that students are explicitly taught to use
  • A rigid template supplied by the department, especially in methodology chapters
  • Very uniform sentence lengths with little rhythm
  • Highly technical or standardised content where there is only one sensible way to write something

What we do if your score comes back high

  • Show you exactly which blocks and sentences were flagged
  • Talk through the likely reason each one triggered the model
  • Help you assemble evidence of your own process: drafts, notes, version history, search records and research files
  • Advise on genuinely rewriting a section where that is the right answer, by a human editor
  • Re-check the document afterwards and send the updated report

If the writing is yours, evidence of your process is what settles the matter, not a rewrite done to fool a detector.

A word of caution. Rewriting honest work purely to lower an AI score usually makes the writing worse and rarely moves the number much. Where the score reflects real AI use, the answer is to rewrite the content properly, which is work we will do by hand or coach you through, not to run it through another tool.

DrillBit or Turnitin: which do you need?

In short

Use whichever your institution asks for. Indian universities and colleges commonly require DrillBit, while most universities abroad require Turnitin. The two systems search different databases, so the same document will usually return two different percentages, and neither figure is wrong.

Report only, or report plus reduction

Report only

You want to see where you stand before you submit.

  • Both PDFs: the similarity report with your grade and the AI detection report
  • Written notes on every match and every flagged block that matters
  • Confirmation of the settings used
  • Turnaround of 30 to 45 minutes on most documents

Report plus similarity reduction

The grade is too low and you need the percentage brought down properly.

  • Everything in the report only option
  • A human editor rewrites passages that sit too close to source
  • Citations corrected and quotations formatted to your required style
  • Over quoted sections rebalanced with your own analysis
  • Document re-checked and the new report sent to you

What reduction means here

  • Genuine paraphrasing by a subject editor who has read the source
  • Adding the citations that were missing
  • Formatting quotations correctly so they can be filtered
  • Restructuring paragraphs that lean on a single source
  • Replacing long block quotes with your own argument
  • Identifying self matches so they can be excluded rather than rewritten

The line we draw

  • No hidden or white coloured text
  • No character substitution from other alphabets
  • No invisible spacing or image based text tricks
  • No word spinners or synonym swapping that mangles the meaning
  • No AI rewriting tools, on any part of your document
  • No promise of a specific percentage before we have seen the file
Why this matters. Detection systems already flag manipulated files, and a flagged file turns a fixable citation problem into a deliberate deception case. Indian universities treat that far more seriously than a high percentage, and it can follow a scholar through their viva and beyond.

How it works

Four steps, and most documents come back in 30 to 45 minutes.

1

Send the file

WhatsApp or email the document in Word or PDF, and tell us any exclusion rules or percentage ceiling your department has set.

2

We run the check

The document is checked with the databases and exclusion settings your institution uses, so the result matches what they will see.

3

You get the report

The full PDF with your percentage, grade and matched source list, plus written notes on what each significant match is.

4

Reduce and re-check

If the grade needs to improve, an editor works through the flagged passages, then we run the file again and send the new report.

Who this is for

Research scholars before submission

Your university requires a DrillBit report with the thesis, and you would rather find the problem chapters now than after the supervisor sees them.

PG and UG students

Project reports and dissertations that need a certificate or report attached before the department will accept the submission.

Authors preparing for journals

Indian journals and UGC listed publications run their own similarity checks. Clearing the manuscript first avoids a rejection that costs months.

Scholars with a self match problem

Your synopsis or an earlier draft is already in the database and is matching against your final thesis. We identify it so it can be excluded.

Why students send their files to us

Since 2019

Swift Academic Services has supported students across more than 40 countries, with over 4,800 projects delivered.

Most departments now ask for similarity and AI together. Send the file once and you get both, explained side by side.

Explained, not just emailed

Anyone can forward a PDF. We tell you what the grade means for your document and exactly what to do next.

Human editors only

We do not use AI writing tools on any part of your work. Checking a document with software is fine, because it only reads. Writing is never handed to a machine.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good DrillBit similarity percentage?

Grade A is 0 to 10 percent and is accepted almost everywhere. Grade B is 11 to 40 percent and is often accepted too, although many Indian universities set their own ceiling at 10, 15 or 20 percent regardless of the band. Your department handbook is the only figure that actually binds you.

What do the A, B, C and D grades mean?

A is Satisfactory at 0 to 10 percent, B is Upgrade at 11 to 40 percent, C is Poor at 41 to 60 percent, and D is Unacceptable at 61 to 100 percent. The grade is calculated from the similarity percentage, so lowering the percentage is what moves the letter.

Does a high percentage mean I have plagiarised?

No. The percentage counts matched text, which includes quotations you attributed properly, standard terminology and your reference list if it was not excluded. A thesis can show 35 percent and be entirely honest, or 8 percent and contain one uncited paragraph that causes trouble. The matched source table tells you which situation you are in.

Why did I get a different percentage from a different check?

Because the settings differed. Which databases were searched, and whether quotes, the bibliography and short matches were excluded, all change the result. Two honest checks of the same file can legitimately differ by a wide margin, which is why we record the settings used on yours.

Will my document be stored in the DrillBit database?

Tell us before you send the file if this matters to you, and we will confirm exactly how your submission is handled before we run anything. It is worth asking about, because if a document is added to the repository, your university’s own later submission of the same work can match against it heavily.

My own earlier draft is matching. What do I do?

That is a self match and it is common, especially when a synopsis or a progress report was submitted earlier. It is not misconduct. The fix is to identify the matching submission and ask your institution to exclude that source when they run the final check, rather than rewriting work that was always yours.

How long does it take?

Most documents come back in 30 to 45 minutes. Full theses submitted at peak times can take longer, and a re-check after edits is not always instant. If you are against a submission deadline, say so when you send the file.

Which file formats do you accept?

Word and PDF cover almost everything. Scanned pages and photographs cannot be assessed properly because there is no selectable text to compare, so send the original document wherever you can.

Can you check a full PhD thesis?

Yes, and long documents are a large part of what we do. For a full thesis we usually suggest checking chapter by chapter during writing rather than once at the end, because a citation problem in chapter two is far easier to fix before chapter six is built on it.

Can you reduce my similarity percentage?

Yes, by fixing what is causing it. A human editor rewrites passages that sit too close to their source, adds missing citations, formats quotations correctly and rebalances sections that lean on one reference. We do not use spinners, character tricks or AI rewriting tools.

Do you guarantee a particular grade?

No, and be careful with anyone who does. The final figure depends on your subject, how much you legitimately quote, which databases are searched and what is already in the repository. What we commit to is that every uncited match is dealt with and that you understand the report before you submit it.

Do you use AI to write or rewrite my work?

No. Swift Academic Services does not use AI writing tools on any part of a client document. Running a file through a checker is different, because a checker only reads the text. Writing and rewriting are done by human editors.

What is the difference between the DrillBit similarity report and the AI report?

The similarity report matches your text against existing sources and gives a percentage plus a letter grade. The AI report does not match anything; it estimates how much of your writing shows the statistical patterns of machine generated text. They are produced separately and measure different things, so a document can score low on one and high on the other.

What is a good AI detection percentage?

There is no published band system for the AI score the way there is for similarity grades, and institutions are still settling on their rules. Many departments treat anything in single figures as unremarkable and look closely above roughly 20 percent, but your own handbook or supervisor is the only guide that binds you. Ask before you assume a threshold.

Why was my own writing flagged as AI?

AI detection scores patterns, not authorship. Heavily grammar corrected text, writing translated from another language, rigid departmental templates, very uniform sentence lengths and highly standardised technical content can all raise the figure. DrillBit itself notes that formal, translated or template based text may produce elevated signals in any detection system.

What does block level analysis show me?

Your document is split into blocks, and each one gets its own sentence count, word count and AI matched percentage. This tells you which specific sections are driving the overall score, so you can look at two paragraphs rather than re-reading an entire thesis.

Can you give me both the similarity and the AI report together?

Yes. That is the normal order for us, because most departments now ask for both. Send the file once and we return both PDFs with written notes explaining each number.

Should I rewrite my work to lower the AI score?

Not if the writing is genuinely yours. Rewriting honest work purely to move a detector score usually makes the writing worse and rarely shifts the number much. The better route is evidence of your process: drafts, notes and version history. Where the score reflects real AI use, the content needs rewriting properly by a human, which is work we will do or coach you through.

Are you affiliated with DrillBit?

No. Swift Academic Services is an independent academic consultancy. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by or a reseller for DrillBit, and we do not sell DrillBit accounts or licences. We run checks for our clients and explain the results.
