Grading & GPA
Support mapped to NZ grade bands (A+ to E) and the 9-point GPA scale.
How New Zealand Grades: Bands, GPA and Honours
Every New Zealand university marks out of 100, passes at 50 and converts your marks to a nine-point GPA. Knowing exactly where a paper sits on that scale is the difference between “it was fine” and “that was a B+ four marks short of an A-“.
| Grade | Mark | Grade points | What markers are rewarding at this band |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+ | 90 to 100 | 9 | Outstanding, independent thinking. Original argument, flawless referencing, publishable in places. |
| A | 85 to 89 | 8 | Excellent command of the literature with sustained critical analysis, not description. |
| A- | 80 to 84 | 7 | Very strong work. Clear argument, wide and current reading, accurate citation throughout. |
| B+ | 75 to 79 | 6 | Good analysis with some evaluative depth. Usually loses marks on structure or referencing detail. |
| B | 70 to 74 | 5 | Solid, accurate and well organised, but more descriptive than critical. |
| B- | 65 to 69 | 4 | Competent coverage of the material with limited engagement beyond the set readings. |
| C+ | 60 to 64 | 3 | Meets the brief. Gaps in evidence, argument or referencing consistency. |
| C | 55 to 59 | 2 | Adequate. Key ideas present but underdeveloped or loosely supported. |
| C- | 50 to 54 | 1 | The minimum pass. Learning outcomes just met. |
| D / E | Below 50 | 0 | Fail. The fail structure is the one thing that is not standard nationally, see below. |
Where the eight universities actually differ
Three fail grades, no E
Auckland splits failure into D+ (45 to 49), D (40 to 44) and D- (0 to 39). All are worth zero grade points. If you are reading advice that mentions an “E” at Auckland, it is not written for your university.
E is worth minus one
UC is the only NZ university where the lowest fail grade carries a negative grade point, so a failed paper actively pulls a UC GPA down rather than just diluting it. UC also states its bands to one decimal place, for example 85 to 89.9.
The standard D and E split
Two fail grades: D for 40 to 49 and E for 0 to 39. Massey additionally labels its bands as First Class Pass (A range), Second Class Pass (B range) and Pass (C range) on transcripts.
AG, G, L, R, S, AE, X
Aegrotat passes appear as AG at Massey and G at Victoria. Victoria also has L for a compensation pass. Canterbury uses R for a Restricted Pass, which counts for everything except as a prerequisite, S for a Special Pass and X where dishonesty is recorded. Otago awards AE, an A+ with Distinction.
Honours classifications
| Class | GPA required | How it is usually expressed |
|---|---|---|
| First Class Honours | 7.00 and above | An A- average or better across the honours year, including the research component. |
| Second Class Honours, Division I | 5.50 to 6.99 | Broadly a B+ average. Often the practical threshold for doctoral entry and scholarships. |
| Second Class Honours, Division II | 4.00 to 5.49 | Broadly a B to B- average. |
Points, credits and workload
One point is ten hours
Points and credits mean the same thing in New Zealand. One point represents roughly ten notional hours of total work, so a 15 point paper is planned around 150 hours including your own reading and writing.
120 points is a full year
A standard full time year is 120 points, which equals 1.0 EFTS (Equivalent Full Time Student). A three year bachelor’s degree is 360 points, with at least 72 at Level 7.
Why this matters for planning
When we scope your support we work backwards from the point value. A 30 point capstone is not “a long essay”, it is a quarter of your academic year, and it gets planned that way.
AI, Plagiarism and Academic Integrity in New Zealand, and How We Maintain It
This is the part of the process most services keep vague. We would rather be specific, because in New Zealand the rules changed fast between 2024 and 2026, and most of the advice students are given online is now simply out of date.
First, the two Turnitin numbers are not the same thing
| Similarity Report | AI Writing Indicator | |
|---|---|---|
| What it measures | The percentage of your text that matches sources already in Turnitin’s databases: the web, published journals and previously submitted student papers. | The percentage of qualifying prose a model predicts could have been generated by AI, or paraphrased by an AI tool. |
| How it works | Deterministic text matching. Run it twice and you get the same answer. | A probabilistic prediction. It is an estimate, not a measurement. |
| What a high number proves | Nothing on its own. Turnitin’s own position is that it does not check for plagiarism, it identifies matching text. | Nothing on its own. Turnitin states it should not be the sole basis for action against a student. |
| Common innocent causes | Correctly quoted and cited passages, your reference list, the assignment question, standard methods sections and fixed technical phrasing. | Formulaic academic register, simple sentence structure, heavily edited drafts, and writing by people whose first language is not English. |
Most New Zealand universities have stopped trusting AI detectors
This is the single most important thing to understand about AI and assessment in Aotearoa right now, and it cuts both ways.
Massey switched AI detection off
Massey disabled Turnitin’s AI detection on Stream, stating that significant concerns had been raised about the reliability of the approach, and that it wanted to build a culture that values assessment as learning and avoids unnecessary surveillance.
Never adopted it
Auckland does not endorse automated AI detection tools, having considered and rejected the idea some years ago on the basis that it was not worth it.
Does not use detection software
Victoria has confirmed it does not run AI detection software, relying instead on assessment design, in person tasks and academic judgement.
Integrity by design, not by detection
AUT’s stated approach is that integrity is upheld through intentional assessment design that assures learning, rather than through reliance on invigilation, declarations or detection.
What each university says about using generative AI
| University | Governing document | Default position when the course outline is silent |
|---|---|---|
| Auckland | Student Academic Conduct Statute, plus guidelines on academic misconduct, poor academic practice, contract cheating and permitted software | A two lane model. In invigilated exams, orals and practicals AI is restricted by default. In essays, reports and presentations use is not restricted, and the student who prompts is treated as the author. From 2027 every course must label each assessment as one lane or the other. |
| AUT | Assessment design guidance and academic integrity policy | A two channel model mirroring Auckland. Invigilated assessment does not permit AI tools, other assessment does. |
| Massey | Generative Artificial Intelligence in Assessment Policy, plus the Academic Integrity Policy | Prohibited unless explicitly allowed. Four named levels are set per assessment: NO AI, AI PLANNING, AI COLLABORATION and AI EXPLORATION. The strictest disclosure regime in the country, potentially including your prompts and your document version history. |
| Waikato | Student Discipline Regulations | Prohibited unless explicitly permitted, with permissions published through the Paper Outline Tool on Moodle. Unapproved use is misconduct. |
| Victoria (VUW) | Generative Artificial Intelligence Policy, effective February 2025, plus the Student Academic Integrity Regulation | Prohibited unless authorised. Unauthorised use to substantially complete any component of coursework is treated as potential academic misconduct. |
| Canterbury | Student Code of Conduct and academic misconduct regulations | Entirely course dependent, ranging from fully excluded to unrestricted or even required. Where AI is used, disclosure is mandatory and must describe how it was used. |
| Otago | Academic Integrity Policy and Student Academic Misconduct Procedures | Course dependent. Staff must state which tools are allowed and why, and unacceptable use is treated as academic misconduct. |
| Lincoln | Academic Integrity Policy and Procedure | Binary per assessment. Where permitted, take home work needs a cover page declaration naming the tools, describing the use and listing the prompts. Unauthorised use is classified under ghost writing. |
How we maintain originality on every piece of work
We start from your rules, not ours
Before anything is written we take your course outline, your rubric, your referencing style and your university’s integrity and AI position. If your paper sits in a no AI band, that constrains the entire engagement.
Source first research
Every claim is traced to a real, checkable source that we have actually read. No invented citations, no fabricated data, no references to papers that do not exist. This is a hard rule and it is not negotiable.
Written from scratch, every time
Nothing is recycled from a previous student’s work, and we keep no library of pre written essays to resell. Work delivered to you is never delivered to anyone else, which is what keeps it out of the student paper database that flags the next person.
Referencing built and checked entry by entry
Citations and the reference list are built in your required style, then checked back against each source individually. This is where most easy marks are lost and it is the cheapest place to gain them.
Similarity checked before it reaches you
A similarity report is run before delivery and the matched text is reviewed line by line, not just glanced at as a number. Quoted and cited matches stay. Uncited overlap gets rewritten or properly attributed.
Explained, not just handed over
You receive the report with the work, plus a short walk through of the argument and the sources, so you can defend the piece in a tutorial, a viva or an integrity meeting. If you cannot explain it, it has not been delivered properly.
What we will and will not do
What we do
- Tutoring, structural feedback and worked explanation of difficult material
- Model answers and exemplars that show you how a band is reached
- Research support, literature searching and source evaluation
- Editing and proofreading of work you have written
- Referencing correction and reference list construction in any NZ style
- Statistical analysis with the method explained so you can defend it
- Thesis and dissertation coaching chapter by chapter, at your pace
- A similarity report and a plain English explanation of what it shows
What we will not do
- Sit an invigilated exam, online test or proctored assessment for you
- Log in to your university account, Canvas, Moodle, Stream or Blackboard
- Submit work to your university on your behalf
- Resell work already delivered to another student
- Invent citations, sources, participants or data
- Help you falsify a declaration about AI use, or write your prompt log for you
- Claim we can guarantee a specific grade or a specific similarity percentage
- Tell you that a detector score is something we can control

The New Zealand Academic Vocabulary, Decoded
If you have studied anywhere else, several of these words mean something different here. Getting them wrong in an email to your coordinator is a small thing that reads badly.
What other systems call a module or a unit. Waikato, Otago and Massey say “paper”. Auckland, Victoria and Canterbury say “course”. Both are correct, in the right place.
The same thing. One point is roughly ten hours of total work, 120 points is a full time year, and 120 points equals 1.0 EFTS.
Victoria and Waikato run three trimesters of about twelve weeks. Auckland, Otago, Canterbury and Massey run two semesters plus a summer school. Not a national standard.
The official published description of a paper’s content and learning outcomes. If a marker says your essay was “outside the prescription”, this is the document they mean.
Everything that counts toward your final grade other than the formal examination: essays, tests, labs, presentations, portfolios. The assessment weighting tells you the split.
Consideration for an assessment you missed because of illness, injury, bereavement or a family emergency. Appears as AG at Massey and G at Victoria.
Consideration where you did sit the assessment but performed below your normal standard. The difference from aegrotat is participation: absent versus present but impaired.
The umbrella term increasingly replacing the pair above. Criteria and deadlines vary by university, so check yours rather than assuming, for example Massey requires the assessment to be worth at least ten percent and applications within two weeks.
The New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework, renamed from the NZQF in 2022 when micro credentials were added. Many university documents still say NZQF. Same framework, Levels 1 to 10.
NZQA owns the framework and quality assures non university providers. Universities NZ holds delegated approval powers and works through CUAP, the Committee on University Academic Programmes, which meets twice a year.
The National Certificate of Educational Achievement, the standards based secondary qualification at Levels 1 to 3 and the main university entrance pathway. A replacement structure has been agreed with rollout from 2028 to 2030, so NCEA remains the operative qualification for everyone currently at university.
A Maori tertiary institution where learning is grounded in kaupapa Maori and ahuatanga Maori. There are three, and all award qualifications up to doctoral level.
A Maori led, Maori centred approach grounded in Maori values, knowledge and worldview. As a research methodology it means research by Maori, with Maori and for Maori, not simply research about Maori topics.
The 1840 founding constitutional document. “Te Tiriti” specifically denotes the Maori text, which differs materially from the English “Treaty” text. Which one you cite is a scholarly decision, not a formatting one.
A final year integrative paper or project that pulls the degree together, often applied or client facing. Usually high point value, so plan it as a quarter of your year.
A Canterbury result code, R, which passes the paper for every purpose except as a prerequisite for a later paper. Worth knowing before you plan next year’s enrolment.
